ABOUT CHRIS
I have always been drawn to the male form. Some of my earliest memories are of the sense of wonder and shame I felt when I saw men unclothed. Whether it was furtive glances around a locker room or a slow walk through the underwear aisle, I was always looking.
It was not until many years later when I was out and accepted that I began to explore this attraction as an artist. As a photographer I am always striving to speak the truth through the images I capture. The images here are more than some tasty smut; they are my attempt at Illuminating what it is about the male form that I have always found the most compelling.
The idea of male beauty has historically been rooted in the idea that a man’s desirability comes from society’s perception of his strength and power. We are told that a man cannot be both powerful and vulnerable for these are contradictory elements. However, like the forces of nature, man can be both soft and strong and it is this duality that I find most captivating. I strive to strip away the singular perception of power by portraying the male form in a state of vulnerability – exposed to the force and beauty of nature without his protective armour. To be naked and alone in nature is sacred and disconcerting; it has been my privilege to stand behind the camera while men undress, both their clothes and their masks. This forced vulnerability allows the model to expose his unguarded self and the moment captured is of sensual authenticity.
